Brief Overview
In Spring 2017, I joined Metamorphosis camp as part of the marketing team. Metamorphosis is a freshman orientation camp for the School of Information Systems (SIS), Singapore Management University (SMU).
Theme
For this particular year, the committee settled with the theme ‘Mythical Creatures’.
Preparations
Fast forward a few months, the committee members asked me if I wanted to give each ‘clan’ leader the freedom to create their own emblem/logo.
Let me do up a holistic set of clan logos instead.
If I were to let the clan leaders design their own logos, it would be troublesome for myself, to harmonise their designs for the camp's various marketing materials. As a result, I volunteered to do them for the sake of consistency. However, this also meant that I had more things to do. On the back of my head, I thought this was a good opportunity to learn Adobe Illustrator and draw some vector illustrations.
Before starting, I tasked each clan leader to finalise their chosen ‘mythical creature’ and colour. This ensured that the ‘mythical creature’ for the overall camp (decided by myself) would not overlap with their ideas.
Design Process
After completing the necessary preparations, I began my work.
The Metamorphosis Logo
My first ‘mythical creature’ that came to mind was the glowing reindeer that Harry Potter himself summoned.
I have a habit to fit my illustrations into a circle so they could easily become a logo. So I simply took a reindeer picture I found online, make it black and white, and clipped it to a circle. Why a reindeer? It's the closest animal that could fit into a letter 'M'.
Since the rounded ‘M’ in the first draft was too ambiguous, I tried to make it more obvious by creating two rays of light to ‘force’ the letter out. At this point, the job of the reindeer was done and it was time to remove the head and keep the horns (as shown in the 5th icon iteration). I added some texture to the rays of light to make it consistent with the horns and voila, the logo was born. I proceeded to package it into a circle and added a ‘magical’ looking font to pair with it. I decided to change the colour to gold/fiery to match the look.
